Arsenal v Wigan preview

Arsenal can keep pace with the Premier League leaders on Saturday with victory over Wigan.

In fact, should Manchester United come unstuck in their home date with Birmingham, the Gunners could clamber to the summit with three points against the Latics.

That, though, is unlikely, given that the Red Devils have yet to suffer a defeat this season, so remaining within touching distance of top spot will be the priority for Arsene Wenger's side.

They will also be out for revenge this weekend, with Wigan having surprisingly snatched a share of the spoils in a 2-2 draw at the DW Stadium at the end of December.

The Gunners can ill-afford to suffer a similar setback this time around, but will be aware that they have now dropped five points from winning positions in their last two meetings with the Latics.

On a more positive note, they have won all eight of their home dates with Wigan in all competitions down the years and will be looking for more of the same on Saturday.

It is imperative that they do end the day with another three points in the bag, as no title-winning side has dropped more than 10 points on home soil since Arsenal in 2001/02, and the Gunners have already let 11 slip this term.

Wigan, though, will arrive at Emirates Stadium occupying a standing inside the top flight drop zone fully aware that their recent record in North London makes for depressing reading.

They have won just one and lost eight of their 11 previous Premier League fixtures with the Gunners and have fared woefully in the capital.

On top of having never managed to win against Arsenal on the road, they have also failed to find the target on their last five visits to the Emirates.
